Employment
It's been well over a month since my last post (if we ignore the 'test' post of my cat, now deleted (the post, not the cat)), and a lot has happened. The main thing being I got a job!
I'm now working in another call centre. This time I'm actually on the telephones. It's odd that I've managed to avoid telephones during the last 5 years of me working in call centres, but prior to that I have had 6 years of telephone based call centre work, so I have plenty of experience.
There was a two week training session which I've just completed, and that is followed by a week of watching someone else work, then after that I do 'proper' work. Sometime in the near future I hope to progress and do some techie stuff on the phones, and after that, who knows, maybe more non-phone work!

Gaps
There are lots of gaps between Dewi and I. The obvious one is the
physical space between us, filled with lots and lots of water. There
is also an age gap, which is quite significant. There is an experience
gap too. We can both list personal activities which the other won't
have experienced, but one of us has done far fewer than the other.
Today I discovered cultural differences which I hadn't picked up on
before. I guess it's to be expected in long distance friendships, but
some differences are harder to accept than others, so they cause
conflict. I'm the 'old fasioned' one, and Dewi is more modern. I want
to say I'm open minded but the old saying is true... you can't teach
an old dog new tricks.

Snow
We had a couple of inches of snow today. That might not sound like
very much to some people, but to the north-west of England it is more
than enough to send the whole area into chaos. 1,500 schools in the
area were closed, shops and offices either closed early or never
opened at all, and the transport system ground to a halt. It only
takes a few minor incidents on the icy roads to create total gridlock,
with 20 minute journeys taking 4 hours!
The unfortunate people who rely on public transport and did succeeded
in getting to work this morning, found they had to walk home as busses
and trains were suspended.
It will be worse tomorrow as the snow will turn to ice with the
freezing temperatures expected tonight.

Resolutions Update
Today was the first day of my New Years Resolutions, and I think it went okay. I didn't get out of bed particularly early, but it was just too warm in bed, and too cold outside!
I did apply for a job, and updated my details with a couple of job websites, so it was productive.
Now I know Dewi has read my blog and is checking up on me, I really am determined to make the effort, and I do think having support like that genuinely helps.
I watched the highlights show of Celebrity Big Brother, but as it's highlights from the previous day, and all they did the previous day was enter the house at night, there wasn't very much in the way of highlights. They did have to all squeeze into a Mini (a small iconic british car) as an icebreaker task, and they were successful, which is quite an acheivement considering there are 11 of them. I'm sure you can find YouTube clips if you care to search for them. I'll be sure to keep Dewi informed of any interestig antics of a certain Sweedish dj/producer!

Celebrity Big Brother 7
Tonight was the launch of the latest (and last ever) Celebrity Big Brother on Channel 4. I always make a point of watching the launch just to see who is in it, and if I have actually heard of any of them!
This year, the 'housemates' are...
Stephen Baldwin, actor (Barney Rubble in The Flinstones, has famous brothers)
Nichola Tappenden, topless model (who?)
Alex Reid, cage fighter (known for his high profile girlfriend, Katie Price)
Stephanie Beecham, actress (a well known actress, mainly for Dynasty)
Lady Sovereign, grime singer (who?)
Sisqo, R&B singer (used to be in Dru Hill, and had a solo hit with The Thong Song ???)
Dane Bowers, singer songwriter (known for his high profile ex-girlfriend, Katie Price)
Heidi Fleiss, businesswoman (ran a Hollywood prostitution ring, jailed for 3 years)
Jonas Altberg, producer and DJ (known as Basshunter, has had dance hits all over the world)
Ekaterina Ivanova, model & artist (who?)
Vinnie Jones, ex-footballer & actor (Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels, X-Men 3)
An interesting mix this year. I would only class two of them as Celebrities in the true sense, and they would be Stephanie Beecham and Vinnie Jones. However, I know a few others from watching the odd bit of entertainment news on tv, or in the newspapers. But if you were to ask someone younger than myself, then they would give you a different opinion about which of those people were famous. We have four weeks of this on our tv screens, hundreds of hours of live streamed tv, mainly overnight when they're asleep (yes, hours and hours of watching people sleep), and the 'highlights' show to look forward to every evening.
I won't be watching the live streaming. Not just because it's often very dull, but I don't receive digital tv in my room, so it's not actually possible. I will probably watch the highlight shows, and i'm tipping Vinnie Jones to win. You heard it here first!

Resolutions
It's customary to make New Year's resolutions in the UK, and I'm sure it's the same in the US. I've decided I'm going to try to work harder.
Ok, so I'm currently not working at all as I'm unemployed, but I don't just mean employed work, I'm talking about work in general. I never seem to get the balance right with work. I either do too much of it, or too little. When I am doing employed work, I often do work in my own time at weekends, and since being unemployed, I've been getting more and more lazy to the point where weekdays and weekends are pretty much the same thing.
So my plan is to do something during weekdays, and maybe write it down if I have to so I have a record of it, and that might help me remember to do it. Then at weekends, I'm planning on relaxing, or doing something fun, anything really, just so long as there is a clear distinction between the days.
It would be good to look forward to weekends again, like I remember doing when I was in school. I'll be spending time with family tomorrow, then on Monday I'll put some extra effort into looking for paid work. Maybe review my C.V. (resume) or find some other recruitment websites to join. I'm going to make it Dewi's job to check up on me, and make sure I'm sticking to my plan!

Ad of the Decade
Following on from Dewi's post about funny commercials, we had a tv show here on Sunday called Ad of the Decade which was a top twenty list of ad's (advertisments, commercials) as voted for by viewers of the tv station that was airing the show, ITV.
The commercial that Dewi likes so much was in the top twenty, but only at number 19. It was one place ahead of the Budweiser whassup commercial, which was one of the few american ones that made the list.
The winning ad was for a company that makes bread, Hovis. It was filmed in Liverpool and depicts a boy buying a loaf of bread, and on the way home he witnesses important scenes of the last 120 years, which is how long the company has been making bread for.
I found a website here that has recreated the list and has links to the ad's, in case you want to see them.

Google Wave
I've finally got a Google Wave account, and I am enjoying trying out its features. As it's still only in Preview release there are some things that aren't available yet, and a few bugs that I've noticed too. I had 8 invitations available, so I gave Dewi an invite. I hope she will embrace it and use it often, but I won't be forgetting about this blog!

Unemployment
I have been unemployed for almost 3 months. I am trying hard to look for work, but it seems to be harder than ever to find a job in the current ecconomic climate (as people on the tv news always like to say).
I thought I got a job last Friday. I had applied some weeks back, waited, attended a preliminary interview, waited, took a telephone interview, waited, and then on Friday I attended a 4 hour interview at the company's premises. I answered questions, did a group discussion with other applicants, had a telephone role play with an 'angry customer', and finally a 'proper' interview where I had to say why i was suitable for the role and explain my experience and give examples of all the qualities and traits they were looking for. I thought it had gone quite well, maybe except for the last part as it's been about 6 years since I last did this kind of call centre work, and I was a little bit rusty. Anyway, after all that, I was told I wasn't what they were looking for, I didn't quite show the 'drive' they wanted to see in their employees. Grrrrrr!

Long Distance Relationships
Long distance relationships don't work. They can't work. You can easily have long distance friends, but closer relationships need to include a physical element which just isn't possible when two people are kept seperate.
If there was a way for those two people to get together, even just occassionally, then maybe it could work out. I've not been lucky enough to test that out, so I can't really comment.

Optical Illusion 1
I really like optical illusions, and I thought I had pretty much seen them all before, but then I saw this on Derren Brown's blog, so thought I would share it here.
This one is really good because when I followed the instructions and focused just on the green dot in the middle, and watched the yellow dots appear and disappear, I still didn't know what the illusion was supposed to be, lol.

Derek Acorah
A couple of hours ago I sat down to watch Michael Jackson: The Live Seance on television. I was expecting it to be bad tv, and it was. No, it was worse.
I am very skeptical about this sort of thing anyway, so when all the boxes are ticked (eg. choosing young, vulnerable, guliable, over-emotional Michael Jackson fans to take part), it's inevitable that the participants get completely taken in by Acorah. I'd like to think that most of the TV viewers can see through this charade, but psychics are big business so unfortunately I'm probably wrong.
If you're wondering what we learned from the seance, it was basically this...
1)Michael is getting used to the spirit world, happy to be with his grandparents.
2)Michael is unhappy about journalists telling lies.
3)David Gest is STILL the most incredibly annoying name-dropper on the planet.

Happy Birthday Blogger
Blogger is celebrating it's 10th birthday. Just thought I'd wish it many happy returns.
It's been a while since I've blogged here. I've been out of work for over a month so there really aren't any excuses.
I'm not at my happiest at the moment. Short of money with no signs of anyone wanting to employing me, and still recoving from flu which I've had for well over a week and it's depressing me! I don't believe in luck but maybe I should, I really need my luck to change!

Barry Scott
After watching the Billy Mays infomercial posted by DewTheZamboni, I was instantly reminded of Barry Scott. Barry does commercials for Cillit Bang (Dewi may know it as Easy-Off BAM)and he is the closest we get in Britain to Billy Mays...
...the main difference is that Billy seems to have been well respected, and Barry is simply just annoying!
Then, when looking up details of Barry Scott to post on here, I found out that he doesn't exist! He's simply a character played by an actor called Neil Burgess. That just makes him even more annoying! His only saving grace is his cameo role HERE.

My Thanks
Today I feel the need to thank some people. Bloggingbrit in particular has always been there for me whenever I need someone, no matter how many times I've annoyed him or made him mad. He has been there with me guy after guy, annoying moment after annoying moment. I luv him more than I think he knows, I just wish the stupid ocean wasn't in the way to prevent us from being together. He's my best friend.
Freddie has also been there for me. He's always got something to say to make me feel better, even though he can be a pest sometimes, he's never given me reason to get mad at him. I'll miss speech class with him. He really does mean well.
Taylor is a sweetheart as well. Sending me silly pictures when he walks by something that reminds him of me. He was the first person I texted when I woke up this morning and he was in awww. Everyone has said "but you looked so good on myspace/facebook!!" So just proves along with Bloggingbrit's comment about being annoyed for me that this was just so random and odd... no one was expecting it. Anyway, Taylor told me I should talk to his friend. He used to play hockey but now only watches it and stuff. And said he actually told him about me a couple of weeks ago. He thinks I should talk to this friend. I told him I wasn't ready for another relationship and he said he knows but still thinks we should talk. He's a pretty cool guy, at least that's what he said... then I just now got a text "ok, uno min we gotta move a helicopter" he doesn't even have to try to be funny and just about everything that comes out of his mouth (or phone I guess) makes me chuckle.
Christina has been a good friend too. Although we deal with situations in different ways she's always been there for me when I need someone to listen to me.
Emily has been a good friend as well. I won't get to see her at all much because he lives in Palos Verde, which is in L.A. I met her at the LA Kings Women's Workshop. It's fun to have a few girl friends who like the Kings and hockey so much. We can giggle over the players butts together.
Eliza I cannot forget because of what she did for me about Luke. If I could pick any one person to have as a roomie it'd be her. I like her a lot.
Chris, although flighty at times, was there for me when Mattia left me. I remember the text messages we sent to each other about it and he made me feel better, and shared with me things he felt and went through with his loss of a girlfriend that I knew he really really liked. He was thinking about marrying her. But I'm happy for him now. He has a girlfriend I have talked to once (by accident) when I was on Skype and Chris opened a group message with me, him, and his (current) girlfriend. And me and her picked on Chris till he left his own group he made. I approve of her =)
Anton has been a good friend as well. I've only known him about a year, and he is in the US somewhere now... but he was there for me when Mattia left, and has always been supportive. But lately his phone has problems so I haven't heard from him in over a month I think. I hope he's doing ok. He is Russian.
A few other honorable mentions would be Alyssa, Marcus, Filip, and Rob (Bobby) who is currently trapped over in one of the most dangerous places in Iraq right now, as they shut down his base he is at over there and can't come home. He was due back next month and wanted to see me. Now all I'm praying for is that he gets back safely. I miss talking to him and our weird sense of humor together.

Which reminds me... I told my mom about the dream I had both this other day and when Chris was going through problems with his girlfriend. Bloggingbrit knows what I'm talking about. Anyway my mom said that my grandma gets that too sometimes, premonitions and not quite seeing the future, but you get the idea. My dad admitted he gets it too... So it runs in the family. I'm just bummed it always only deals with relationships gone wrong for me.

Fresno
I'm watching a tv documentary about drug use in Fresno, California. Specifically it's about people who use crystal meth. It's depressing to watch. I'm just happy to know that DewTheZamboni will never end up like any of the characters on this show. It's nice to be able to be so sure about something like that. Dewi is a great girl.
